Folling in Al's footsteps here is another quiz on your historical knoweledge ("Ow my head hurts, can we have a harder question please?").

Which American officer uttered this phrase: "No punishment in my opinion is too great for the Man who can build his greatness upon the ruin of his Country's ruin." Hint - he was many times looked on as just an average commander by his peers.

Here is another quote - name this officer - he was one of Washington's Division commanders at Brandywine and a hero on the frontier:
"Our hospital, or rather house of carnage, beggars all description, and shocks humanity to visit."

Finally, what major nation in the world, besides France, in the early going also aided the United States, though indirectly, during the Revolution?

I can't remember the details or any such, but for some reason I keep thinking of our good friend the Tsar!

Gary answered correctly on the nation question. Russia aided the US indirectly thru her dealing with the English. St. Petersburg Grenadier units coming soon!

Answers to the other two questions:
George Washington in a letter to Joseph Reed on a coalition of Whigs. Source - Writings of Washington, XIII, 383.

Anthony Wayne to Horatio Gates made the statement about hospital conditions near Ticonderoga on 1 Dec 1776 - source - Force, American Arichves, 5th Series, III, 1031.
