The siege of Pensacola Florida begins.

The Spanish Governor General Bernardo Gálvez y Gallardo, conde de Gálvez, had just completed a very successful campaign against the English in New Orleans, Natchez, and Baton Rouge.

Gálvez arrived at Santa Rosa island outside Pensacola Bay with 1300 men as well as ships in support.

This marks the beginning of the siege of Pensacola that will continue until 9 May, 1781.

Speakin' o' the Spanish, now there's an army to laugh at. Ye ken the French, an laugh a' them, see the Senors, then, when have they won a war? Ach, I ken they pasted the Aztecs and Inkers and ither native hoords, an' aboot twa hundred years ago they were divils in Italy, but lately? Couldnae even conquer Portugal, them. Maybe its the King's family as curses the army? France and Spain are both ruled by the Bourboons, d'ye see?

I lived in Pensacola for a couple of years and visited a few related sites, which don't amount to a whole lot really. What was most interesting when I was there was that some street repairs downtown led to the excavation of some buried Spanish cannons. The whole block was closed to the public for a few weeks while they recovered them. They were some HUGE suckers!

At MagWeb there was a series of articles covering the Anglo-Spanish fighting along the Gulf Coast. With a little work a nice new set of scenarios could come from them.

That would be interesting. That is one area of the AWI I am very weak on. The F&I developed into a world war as did the AWI, and the Spanish fought the British in that one too. Perhaps we need another army, or an addition to the French forces of a few Spanish regiments.
