Phil Natta and I just concluded our first battle in a Southern Campaign game. We fought to a draw at Charlotte. However the "Conclusion" screen came up, stated that an inconclusive result meant years of turmoil in the South and when you click "next" instead of getting a second battle you were back at the initial campaign game screen --- apparently ending the campaign after one battle. Not what one would have expected.

Is there an explanation for this?

Sometimes a short campaign ends after one battle, and sometimes a draw for one side in a battle is considered a campaign victory for the other side.

This being my first "campaign" I'm not sure I read everything correctly, but I think it was a draw in the first battle and an inconclusive campaign result. I also think that when the battle started the text said either side could achieve a victory. Now we did run up a fair number of casualties -- I would guess at least 30% for each side, Not sure if that is a factor in the decision making logic.

You read it correctly Bob. The text stating that either side could achieve a victory was I think just meant to indicate that both sides had fair chances of winning the upcoming battle. I don't think that casualties play a role in determining a choice of the next battle or campaign result. Still though, I find it a bit odd that an entirely planned out (presumably [:)]) campaign would end as a result of a drawn and relatively minor skirmish. An atrocious waste of face powder, cologne, and rouge what what? [:o)] But, c'est la guerre [}:)]

Actually I've played the Southern Campaign a couple of times and it always ends after one battle but since they were always major victories or defeats, I figured that a clear cut decsion always resulted in a completed campaign. I wonder if there is a glitch in the software. Has anybody goe to two or three games in that campaign?

Well, I checked the campaign in the editor. It's not a glitch.

The first campaign decision can result in six different scenarios for the first battle, Charlotte (a or b), Camden, Cheraw Hills, Cowpens, Guilford CH. If it's Charlotte (either), Guilford, or Camden, the campaign ends after the battle, regardless of the outcome (seems these are considered decisive engagements). If it's Cheraw, the campaign continues after a draw or British minor victory, otherwise it ends. Only if it's Cowpens, the campaign continues in any case.

And yes, the "inconclusive" result is a draw per the campaign tree. Used to think a campaign was always decided one way or the other, but seems not so.
