Don't think this came from Waterloo, but - from memory, so forgive me - "I don't know if they will frighten the enemy, but they frighten me." (On replacements)

General Natta Sir
quote:
Not sure if this really happened, but in the movie "Waterloo", Ponsonby on his mount sits next to Wellington on the ridge when he takes a ball and says in surprise, "By God Sir, I've been shot!". Typically aloof, Wellington glances over and dryly replies, "By God Sir, so you have." Quite the stiff upper lip old Hooky had there!

Sir I think Lord Uxbridge was your man Ponsonby was already dead killd by the polish lancers.

When he received his wound, while sitting astride his horse near Wellington, he looked down at his leg and said, "My God, sir! I have lost my leg!" to which the duke replied in his usual emotionless manner, "My God, sir, you have!" The fact that Uxbridge was still able to remain on his horse makes it appear unlikely that his leg was actually blown clean off.
