Just curious gents (yep, nosy ol Gary strikes again)

Do you play 1776 or 1812 more? And, why?

It strikes me that I see more people looking for 1776 games, and the like, but I've never actually sat down and tried to figure it out.

I find myself playing more 1776 of late. I don't know if it's because the situations are more "familiar" (read: famous) or what. I had originally gotten 1812 first because I consider Winfield Scott to be the Greatest US General ever (including any CSA officer.. so let that brawl begin as well <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>), and I certainly play both, and do my best to keep at least one game of each going at any given time. I certainly like both games one as well as the other, in terms of the system (of course) and scenario design.

That is a good question. For myself, I probably play about 60/40 1776 vs 1812. At the present time, I have 3 1776 scenarios and only 1 in an 1812 campaign. (I know that is 75/25, but I usually have another 1812 going!!!) I don't plan it that way, but it just seems to come up that way.<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

I am more of a binge and purger. For a while I'll start nothing but 1776. Then I will get on a 1812 kick.

No particular reason. Just flighty and unfocused I guess....

No particular preference. The graphics in 1812 are nicer, but the Brit OOB is often a mess.

Maj Walter - the solution to the 1776 graphics problem is to use the artwork from 1812. There is a post somewhere that details what files are needed AND I think the instructions are on Rich H.s pages too.
For me - I like both games equally and that is saying something as I am a big Rev War fan. I found out by doing some reading that there was alot of battles in the 1812 campaign as well and though not as familiar to us (Chrystler's Farm vs. Fraser's Farm for instance) Rich and Al did a fine job of putting this one together. Wish we had a navy sometimes!!! (some of you remember the NWC Navy - we played the Age of Sail game by Talonsoft but sync problems led to real arguments and it was dropped)

I've had 1812 some months now, but so far have only played that Lundy's Lane battle - yet I don't think 1776 is necessarily a better game. In fact, the two games are really very similar (my only complaint about either is that rifles shouldn't be able to fire as rapidly as muskets)and I'd be eager to see another in the same series dealing with the battle of Quebec and other fights against the French Canadians.

Most of all, I'd like to see HPS producing a game (with multiplayer options) for the Seven Years War, set in Europe, North America, India and also at sea. Economic warfare might be an additional element for the campaign game.

Anyway, Gary, are you ready for another encounter? - any field, 1776 or 1812, take your pick.

Actually, my thoughts are that I'd love to see something on the era 1683-1715. Marlborough, Eugene of Savoy, Peter the Great, Charles XII.. Blenheim,Poltava, Malpaquet, the second Turkish battle at the gates of Vienna. I was actually considering doing an adaptation of Eckmuhl for Blenheim, but time, and now the 1.02 patch make that impossible.

As to another match... how bout something medium sized in 1812 then?

Marlborough's wars or the Great Northern War would be equally welcome, as would the Jacobite Rebellion, the English Civil War and the Thirty Years War. Plenty of scope for more great games!

For a moderate sized 1812 game, perhaps North Point or Bladensburg? Or for a smaller fight, how about Beaver Dams?

I had actually emailed John some time back lobbying for the Marlborough game, and his response was basically "love to do it, maybe some day, but I have to make sure I do games that will sell before I do stuff like that".. not his exact words, but that was the gist I'm afraid. Still, I remain ever hopeful.

In any case, message sent to you.. I think that it looks like North Point. Be sure to get Gen Ross nice and close to my guns, no?

I prefer 1776, I tried the 1812 graphics in 1776, but I do not care for the contrast of the trees, so I kept the water file, but changed the foliage back to the original 1776 style. I can see the details better. I also copied 18th century march files from a Williamsburg CD into the music folder, so I have real (good) music from the period. I did not care for the electric instruments and modern arrangements of the music on the game CD. That was a disappointment after the ACW games.
