 Post subject: Possible Virus Update
PostPosted: Thu May 02, 2002 5:55 pm
Mssrs. David O'Connor and Bill Peters just emailed me asking if I had sent them an email today. David's email included a possibly infected zipped attachment named AQCH.MIM with a header of "Hi,welcome to my hometown". Bill's email was blank with a header of "Hello, questionnaire".

I just updated Norton's anti-virus program and ran it and no virus was found. These emails weren't knowingly sent by me, and Bill isn't even in my address book, no offense Bill <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> No one in my address book has emailed me about this except David and Bill. So I'm not sure what's happening but I do apologize if my fault. Any ideas or suggestions anyone?

The Virus in question seems to be a sneaky one. There are a few that pull this trick. When they cull the address book of their victim for people to send it to, they also grab one of those addresses as the "From" in the mail. That way, it makes it much harder to backtrack the virus and alert the person who was originally infected.

So, what does it mean in this case? It means that the person who has this virus has all 3 of you in their own address book.

Thanks for the info Gary. Looks like this might be from within the club then?

Phil,

Absolutely. Check the other thread I posted below for other people's e-mail addresses which are in the address book of the infected computer (mine included).

My Norton has caught several of these sneaky virii, lately. All are from people I KNOW of, but not playing. As Gary has said, it could be anyone that has YOU in their addr book.
