I just found out a neat trick.

My web page provider allows me to see some stats about the hits on my web page. One stat I noticed was over half the people were using 16 bit color. I always use 32 bit. So I changed just now and jumped into a Corinth game.

WOW! The replay flew through. When I used to scroll across the map it took forever. On the map of Corinth you could count to 6 or 7 by the time you could scroll across the whole map in 2D mode. Now you can count to 1 or 2, and the looks are the same.

The obvious reason (maybe) with 16 bit the computer is doing fewer calculation plotting each pixel, so can it can process faster.

Maybe if I were processing photos I would want the 32 bit resolution, but for our games 16 bit seems to be the best since the visual doesn't suffer and the speed increase is phenomenal!!

Finally I understand why you are so much in favor of "slower" tactics. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
