Just found out that I joined the club on May 19, 2001 ... actually, that was a year ago yesterday, but since this boards insists it's still May 19, nobody will notice.
Well, that probably means I am no longer a newbie.

OK, let's see, I'll try to sort out and translate this remarkable conversation ... So, Stefan said I might make general within the year, no, wait, he said that in English anyway. And then I said, well, ah, I do hope I will indeed (can't really express the meaning in English). Then Dave said ... I don't really know what he said but something about being a general in no time at all. And then Gary said (falsely, of course) that his German was not so good and asked us to speak English. Which we'll do from now on. Although, wonder whether the Hessians did.

Dierk,

Looks like Gary is not the only one lacking in German skills. hehehe...

Stefan asked if you were going to make General in a year.

I (attempted) to play a pun on the concept of 'make' from attaining the rank into constructing something. In this case a Hand Puppet, named General! hehehe...

I guess I'd better not mix humor with my German. hehehe...

Better not, German is not really the language of humour. More the language for deep, earnest feelings. And pathos of course.

I think the problem is when Al is making a joke about something I said in English I tend to believe that something was wrong with the way I said it.
