Guys - does anyone play this game and if so do you like it or are you thinking that it needs alot of help. I see that GMT put out alot of modules for it. Are they worth the time in playing them?
I won the new game by GMT on the Byzantine empire that they just put out - Justinian reconquering Rome. It is called Cataphract. I got it at a fraction of its retail price. If anyone plays this game please let me know and when the ADC2 module comes out perhaps we can have a go at it what? (have to speak that way so the British members understand me)

Ahh SPQR, one game I won't be auctioning off! If you like a detailed tactical scale and the era Bill, it's the absolute best on the subject, as are it's successors including Cataphract. That whole game system is really good. Of course there's the obligatory errata because it's always evolving, but the time spent on learning the basic system will allow you to play a lot of great ancients games and modules by GMT.

Phil - thanks for the good report. I did read about some gamey things you can do with it. Hey, what else is new in this hobby! I mean we all start smelling gamey too at times!

One guy brought up the point that you can attach 2 leaders to some cavalry and basically give them 2-4 orders a turn which means that they can act as tanks. I suppose that just like any game House Rules need to be used.

Cataphract will arrive in the new year. I backed out of a Prestags auction this weekend. The guy was selling them all (five games) separately. The entire auctions price was over 300 dollars for five games that went for 8 bucks each or 35 for the Prestags Master pack (which in an auction not long ago sold for 250.00).

I almost stuck in there with Spartan but really - 50 dollars for an antiquated (pun) system?

I am going to order SPQR 2nd Ed. and hope that the P250 plan that GMT gets enough orders to reprint it. I won an auction for the Player's Guide this weekend (retail is 20 - got it for 10). I hope that it will have some resemblance to whatever is being played in 2nd ed.

I might have found a game club that I can attend nearby that plays this game. I offered to do a club demo of Eckmuhl and Wagram for them.

Thanks again for the info.

Bill, GMT is a serious game company who stays on top of things like the "tank" issue you mentioned. I haven't checked my copy but I'm almost positive that this loophole has since been closed with rules updates.

I'll be offering all those SPI Prestags games too in the near future, maybe you'll snag Spartan on the cheap. These old games, to me at least, are like fine old first edition books. Yes the quality might not be up to modern standards, but there's nothing like owning a first edition....as far as a collector is concerned. I don't suppose that every old book collector reads everything that they buy, or that a Pez candy dispenser collector gives their rare and latest acquisition to little Billy or Janey to use either. [:)] Happy hunting Bill!

Legion and Spartan were the best from the Prestags series from what I remember. I also had Musket and Pike which I enjoyed as well.
Legion had some great battles - very balanced for the most part so that you had a wide range of choices for scenarios. The map was not historically specific but once you have seen one green field you have seen them all.
The action was tense with the game coming down to the last turn quite often.
