 Post subject: Hard Drive Hijinx
PostPosted: Sun Mar 02, 2003 8:52 am
I have a hard drive bearing that's just starting to give out, or so I was told by a tech. The symptoms are sudden and periodic buzzing, and when I shut down the system the drive comes to a grinding dead halt instead of the normal slow down. A new drive is enroute but now I'm concerned about having to reinstall everything and losing a bazillion custom settings with Windows XP and other programs. Can any of you more computer literate folks tell me if there's any way to mirror my current hard drive onto a new one or anything I can do to make this process as quick and painless as possible? Thanks for any advice.
Phil

Phil,

One way is to get a copy of Norton Ghost, and then put the new drive in as a slave drive. Boot up the system and boot to the CD, then choose to mirror the original hard drive to the new one.

I'd suggest using your system as little as possible until the new drive arrives. Also, I can hook you up with a copy of Ghost for $25.00 if you need it.

Thanks much Rich, that's sounds about as easy as it can get. I have a friend who has the Ghost program I think, if not I'll email you for details about getting a copy from you.
