Gentlemen of the Colonial Tavern,

Please be upstanding for Denis du Villaret who having earned great distinction on the field of battle in the service of his Royal Majesty Louis, King of France, has be rewarded with a promotion to the rank of Ensigne in Regiment du Bourgogne/Brigade Foix.

In addition, His Gracious Majesty has also seen fit to bestow the title of Chevalier upon Monsieur du Villaret. Congratualtions Denis and may you continue to cause grief and consternation to the foul English swine.

Vive le Roi!

Gentlemen of the Colonial Tavern,

I am sure le Chevalier du Villaret will not mind if I coopt this thread to announce the promotion of another soldier in the armies of La Belle France. It is with great pleasure that I announce the promotion to the rank of Sergent of David Guegan, of les Troupes de la Marine/Brigade des Volontaires.

Congratulations Monsieur and may you kill many more Englishmen (G-Ds) in the service of his Most Catholic Majesty, Louis King of France.

Congratulations, David. I do hope though you serve His Most Christian Majesty, not the despicable King of Spain! [:0]

I believe they both styled themselves as "His Most Catholic Majesty" since France was just as Catholic (on paper anyway) as Spain was prior to the Revolution. Of course, the Spanish Bourbons are merely hangers on to our glorious French rulers. We allow them the little fantasy that they are a soverign nation when in fact they are merely a French province that speaks with a funny accent...much like that silly island of shopkeepers on the other side of the French Channel [:D][8][:p]

Permission to disagree, mon Marquis. [8)]

These are titles granted by the Pope him very self and they are not interchangeable.

"His Most Christian Majesty" = the King of France;
"His Most Catholic Majesty" = the King of Spain;
"His Most Faithful Majesty" = the King of Portugal;

and also

"His Apostolic Majesty" = the King of Hungary. [:)]

Don't forget the Pope's most imaginative title which somehow never quite caught on, His Most Fat Wannabe Usurper Majesty, though I wouldn't know which King this was inspired for. [8)]
