Occasionally, this is driving me crazy and I am beginning to wonder if anyone else has these sound problems with HPS games? One of the following three things happens quite frequently:

1) Upon game start, the background music is caught in a loop of about 10 secs that get repeated again and again.
2) Background music doesn't start at all; I then switch the option off and on, and then it starts, but invariably with problem 1.
3) Background music works fine, but one the first melee, the melee sound effect gets caught in a loop and doesn't get away unless you shut down the game.

Anyone else notice this?

The first time I play a game, I use the sound and music. After that, I never have neither activated.

It sounds like a low memory problem or, because it doesn't happen EVERY time, something is accessing your CPU (like MS FINDFAST) when you start games or play the sounds.

Can you play a normal music CDROM?

It happens about every third or fourth time I start a game. I then restart and it's fixed. Low memory should not be a problem with 512 MB RAM?

Download updated drivers. If that doesn't fix it, then start meddling with programs.

Happened to me for years on two different machines with half a dozen several sets of drivers and different DX versions too. Only common denominator is that it's always Creative Labs cards.

Happens to me on music as well as some of the gunfire effects. Its like there is a delayed reaction. Perhaps the speed of sound was slower in the 18th century...

I've had the same problem on other games with sound files when memory is taxed a bit. I usually just turn off the background music and turn on a good CD on the stereo.

Yeah, I do that too ... problem is I have to switch from 18th century British marching tunes to Civil War songs in between, and I haven't yet found a good CD for Nappy games--any recommendation? [8D]

Yeah, skip the 18th & 19th Century Music! Jam to Boston, Stones or Pink Floyd!

Dierk,

I get exactly the same problem, although this only occurs perhaps 1/5 of the time if that. Try exiting the program and then opening it again and perhaps also try changing the compatibility setting to Win 98. If you've already set it to Win 98 then set it back to Win XP. It's an annoying problem, as it sometimes also affects other battlefield sound effects.

Hmmm... the only sound problems I've encountered is the constant whining, crying and sobbing while watching the replays. [:p]

Beethoven symphonies for 1809. Liszt works well too. Scriabin piano good for Russia, also Shostakovich (sic?) and Mahler. Brahms for 1815. [;)]

Rumor has it that Msr. G Cope listens to Gregorian chants. [:D]
