On 11 May 1745 a great service was done the French by Irish exiles. The battle of Fontenoy has always been regarded by the Irish as a national victory. The charge of the Irish Brigade flung the English back as they were on the point of putting the French to the rout. The Irish went into the battle with the cry, “Remember Limerick.â€

Here's to the Irish and the Wild Geese!

Later that year they sailed to Scotland and rallied 'round Bonnie Prince Charlie, only to be sacrificed at Culloden the following spring.

Not to pick nits, Monsieur, but I believe you meant the forces of Louis XV. By 1745 Louis XIV (the Sun King) was long dead, having passed away of old age around 1714/15, I believe.

That's what I get for 'cut-n-paste'.

While I'm thinking of it, the Irish Brigade, as a whole, was to be sent to help Bonnie Prince Charlie. Events on mainland Europe prevented that and only 1 company was sent from each Regiment, creating the Irish Piques who fought at Culloden. They didn't see much action until the end of the battle, used to delay the English as the rest of the Prince's army made it's escape. They then retreated in order. Those that we caught by the British were sent back to France being considered true soldiers as compared to the highlanders. (most of whom were killed when found)

They were involved at Falkirk as well. Many of the regiments were intercepted by the Royal Navy or turned back.

In addition to the picquets (not entire companies but volunteers from the various regiments) the entire Royal Eccossais (Royal Scots)(sic?) were sent by the French to aid the cause.

Presence of regular French troops was important for the Jacobites because Dutch and German troops were prohibited by treaty from fighting them (following Fontenoy). As a result, the armies that faced the Jacobites, especially early on were not that good.
