Can someone offer information about units having boats and how it all works or tell me where I can find out.

Units that have boats have a "B" next to their movement points.

From the User manual:

"It is possible in some scenarios for units to be flagged as Has Boats. When this occurs, the movement value of the unit is followed with the letter B. When a unit has boats, then it can move into a water hex at a cost of 8 movement points. Leaders without the Has Boats feature can still move into water hexes if they move with units that have boats and do not leave those units while crossing the water hexes."

Units that fire in column may fire while in the boats (at least that is how the Colonial Campaigns games play).

I thought that the units had to be in column, but it doesn't say that in part of the manual I read. The example they show is a unit in line, so I must be wrong on that.

German units with a "U" next to their movement points (for Unterseeboot) can move underwater through a water hex and are immune to defensive fire unless the defending units have a "D" in their unit box (meaning they have depth charges) [:o)].

and can this B-type be applied to cavalry? And if so why Russian cossacks are not rated as having boats in Jena? Actually the didn't but reading accounts on any campaign they took part in you can find an episode when cossacks swam across the river, caused some damage and swam back, or protected the bridgehead while the bridge was destroyed and then swam across the river or vice-versa they crossed it and seized the village having a bridge from behind or whatever. Actually regular russian cavalry did the same several times, but it's approximately as often as a case of dismounted cavalry - rare enough to be ignored.

And if it came to that why russian grenadiers, although praised in the campaign description, have the same quality of C as ordinary infantry? Specially Pavlov's regiment that was one of the most experienced and honorable units in the whole army if not in the world.
