Hi folks ... Matrix Games has announced that John Tiller's Battleground Series of reworked Talonsoft-era games will released for sale in October. Included in the titles are Waterloo, Prelude to Waterloo and Napoleon in Russia. These games originally had better graphics than the HPS games (hand-painted maps). I'm not sure what changes and upgrades have been made to the game system, but there has been some talk on forums of a much better AI (one of the few weak-points of Tiller games). Check out the new Matrix newsletter for details. The games are to be sold in bundles. The civil war games include Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, Chickamauga and Bull Run. Apparently you can buy both groups of titles for $50 (download) or $60 boxed.

Cheers, Conjotter

Great to hear you can get these benchmark games again. I agree the maps were awesome but I have to comment that if its only the AI that they have improved and not the core game engine then I think HPS remain superior. I mean this in the main for the player who is seeking a great game engine, prefer pbem and is not looking for a massive ZOC kill shootout with unrealistic casualties.

from all I have read...

the only changes are to make it vista playable and make them 32 bit versions.

As far as I know, no actual game changes

Now... back to drinking and fighting [:D]

I would hope that the NWC gets mentioned in the Matrix bulletin boards. Playing the AI is good for learning the system if you are a complete newbie, but that is all it is good for.

Matrix is an excellent company. This could send some fresh, er new blood this way. [8D]

When I post there both the NWC and INWC links are in my signature and I normally point that out.

I cant see John improving the AI in that series and having not had done so already in the current Nap series.

If you hear something more on this let me know but I dont put much trust in the rumor that the AI is improved. Improving the AI in the newer series would be nice and our customers who play solo (there are ALOT of them) would really enjoy if the AI was improved.

I have been following the MAtrix version of these games since they first announced it and they are NOT doing anything to the AI or the gameplay at all. Merely making them VISTA ready and re-releasing them.

When that update to the NIR/BTW/PTW by Matrix Games happens, the Administrator of "The Napoleonic Archive" http://nap.phxsim.com/ will upload ALL 'Add-on' files created by NIR Project for many many battles (50+). Some are there now, but 90% still to be uploaded.

Newbies to the Add-on approach can ask questions if needed.

Great site Dirk! Is it yours?? All of the various ins and outs and articles and what not of our community is up there I like it a lot. I know Andy Barnes was trying to get the NIR Project stuff up on Filefront but he stopped after a bit, I had some stuff myself and trying to get it on my Filefront, but I may just wait for this and direct INWC members to download from here. Do you talk with Alberto Neri or Luciano Bassotti at all?? I know they are trying to do some work on NIR Project stuff last time I talked with 'em.

Good stuff! [:D]

On thing that I notice; pop in an Hp game then hit the up grades and you set to play with the old BG games! Well we all know too many things to go thru, 32 bit ect down load hope it works. I still have the BG games when they were in Baltimore on Charles st and then in Wash DC in Rockville. Big Talonsoft!

I for one am still waiting to play a live game instead of the million emails affair of a Talonsoft match.

If Matrix games havent made any real improvements to the games ie. game editor ,map editor etc, better graphics better AI and so on then why re-release them? I hope the price is right[:(!]

My one experience with a TS online game of Nap. was that it was slow.

Maybe it was just my system or connection (at the time it was DSL).

LAN is best (meaning friend at your house with two computers connected by hub).

HPS games seem to play fine over the web as long as you get your modem-router issues sorted out.

The original premise was that there may be folks that have new systems that would like to play these games and since the older games dont load on Vista and XP 32 very well that a re-release would be worth the expense.

Note: the maps are graphics files. There was NO way you could expect a map editor! The Scenario Editor that John had up on his website IS included from what I have heard.
