The code civil was fortunately reformed. But it was change I think, in 1980's (I am not sure). He let France : the Legion of Honneur, the administrative organization (only changed in part in 1982), and such things like that.

The French have not a so bad idea about him that the other Europeans. The prove is that when some historians of differents European countries tried to write an European story book ten years ago, they would not be able to come to an agreement about the Napoleonic era and the chapter was write differently in the french version.

I understand why the other Europeans have a bad idea of Napoleon and I share some of the opinion they develop about his ambituous wars. Anyway I think that the truth is as always, at the middle : he made a lot in Europe but the people hated rightly the reform imposed by force. Sure that like them, I should hate if a German, a British, a Spanish or any other European imposed by force to my country some reforms even these reforms were, for some of them, good for my country.

Best regards

Hi All
I agree with Yann's comments. I would add Napoleon had a vision similar to the EU except he wanted to be the boss[:D]. The other side of the coin was that as the people's leader he was a threat to the old order. I recall under N the average person in France could hold and own land. A revolutionary tradition that he maintained. This was a huge threat to the autocratic states that formed the coalition's against him. Perhaps some of our resident scholars can comment with more accuracy on this.

Vincent Cronin has written a good book on Napoleon entitled 'Napoleon'. It outlines the enormous industry with which N contributed to pretty much everything from foreign exchange systems to the laws and lots more. He was an incredible talent really.

Unfortunately he was a man of his times in ego and war was the thing of which he was the greatest master. A pitty now days he would be Bill Gates I guess.

Considering, the western mind set and the western thoughts of that day and the need for the west to control the vast resources of the world he was the leader. The French revolution freed many and Napoleon stopped the “fraternity of man “the all western thought was reintroduced at a greater level. And he wanted to be the new Caesar to lead the West in conquest of the world. So if you believe that the west should rule the world and its, inhabits then he did a lot but he did establish the way for the next three world wars that are still going on as we speak.

Sure he did. A lot of his general interests and the ideas of the revolution were implemented in the coming century. Also with his defeat came the attempt to set back the clock. Many regular officers and soldiers saw what his ideas could do and took them back to their countries and were treated different ways when trying to enact them. The failure of the old Empires to realize his impact led to their own downfall. The Imperial Sunset book I am reading touches on this throughout, I don't have it on me but may put forth some ideas he wrote when I have time.

Considering more recent French Military history, such as the Franco-Prussian War, WWI & WWII, Dien Bien Phu, it gives the French military something to hang their laurels on.

Oui, the French military did go down hill after him but the German war machine which was built on him did great till WWI and fell apart after WWII. So are we to say that the US is headed the same way? What Great power can say that they added more to Glory then the fine garcons of 1790 to 1815 did I say Vie L’ France Vie’ Napoleon God of War!

WWI : I didn't know it was a French defeat [;)]

The history of France is very often an history of wars between themselves or against the neighbors (Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Great-Britain, Russia, etc.) It didn't start with Napoleon and it didn't stop with him.
