A rider and horse gallup up to the tavern door. For a moment it appeared that the horse would actually enter the Tavern but the rider stopped him with a slap of his glove. As the somewhat muddied rider dismounted, the horse slapped him back with a whisk of his tail. The English officer turned to his horse and bowed and then tipped the stable boy a few shillings to have his horse fed and groomed.

Turning, the English officer entered the Tavern and strode purposefully to the bar. Helga, the barmaid, quickly filled a large mug with a fine ale and handed it to Sir Muddy. Yes, the officer was easily recognized by his somewhat dirty, battle worn, uniform and unpolished boots. His appearance, however, was not slovenly, but gave one the impression of a grizzled veteran that had seen many battles. A heavy cavalry sabre hung from his belt.

After downing the first ale, he quickly asked for another and then began a conversation with the small crowd of officers that had gathered around to greet him and hear his latest news. "Well boys, its a damed near run thing! The French Imperial Guard under General Knox's personal command have stormed the ridge at Mt St Jean on the fields of Waterloo and are trying to break Wellington's center. His aim, I think, is to annihlate Wellington before his Prussian ally can reach the field. The intensity of the fight is almost undescribable. Not to fear, though. The Anglo-Allied army has stymied the Frenchman's plans so far."

Slamming another ale, Sir Muddy began to remove his weapons and coat and asked Helga to bring his other uniform. She disappeared up the stairs and quickly returned with... what? A Prussian uniform? Yes, indeed it was. "Excuse me gents, but I have to change posthaste. Even as I hold the line at Waterloo, I am engaged with those French Marechals Bardon and Lambert in Prussia near Jena. Those impertinent officers have invaded Prussia and we've been fighting for 2 days (nearly 200 turns). I must say that I am much impressed with the Prussian army (and with my partner FM Blackburn). They have held up well and have kept the French horde in front of them. Night is falling now and we'll get a respite but the morrow promises to be a bloody affair. We've heard rumors that our Russian ally is marching to join the fight but so far my Prussian troops have done well.

Excusing himself, Sir Muddy stepped quickly into a small anteroom and emerged in short order in a smartly pressed Prussian uniform. He wore the same dull and muddied boots however. Buckling on his sword, he bade his fellows fare well and exited the Tavern. His horse was waiting in the front and off they rode in a cloud of dust.

Go get him, sir! And if you capture that little cart loaded with swords that he hauls around in his baggage...well, I am ashamed to say that one of mine is almost certainly among them and I would like to have it back if possible.

A French officer seeing his erstwhile opponent in the tavern arose in a somewhat arrogant manner and paraded to the bar. Upon arrival he suddenly assumed a more humble tone as he addressed the Tavern.

'Sir's I give you sir Muddy a man of honour. He fights with the stubborness of a mule but you can be assurred he is no Don Quixote, more the embodiement of our arch enemy the Iron Duke himself. Never fear though my French brothers I shall do my utmost to sweep his army from the fields of Waterloo and then turn on Blucher and send him packing as well. Whatever happens the fight will be epic and hard fought'

Hear, hear, a round for our redoubtable Field Marshall, and the fine French General that seeks to bring him to bay as well! Two of our finest Guardsmen locked in mortal combat. Ah, it warms my heart to see it so and to witness the high honor with which they conduct themselves. They are a tribute to both of their fine armies!

Certainly a match between Hercules against Ulysses could not surpass this pairing.

This IS the Fight of the Century!
