Hi Walt -
I have used the system you speak of myself, in some of the HPS games.
Found it a good use for the HQ staff that accompanies Napoleon (which is
what they were often used for anyways). The Allied armies don't have such a
support staff, so we used some cavalry squadrons, broken down to platoons. I
like this method a great deal.

Walt - I will think about that as my plan was just for the players to count the hexes from leader to leader.

For those really long distances I will show the players how to make a "Distance Ruler" that they can use for their game. Basically you use the 2D Zoom Out view and lay a piece of paper over it which has a hex distance scale along the edge. Can also be folded up to give it some thickness.

As each screen is different the players would have to make them up on their own. I plan on using Photoshop and a screenshot from my game to build my own "PC" ruler that I just use right on the GUI.

In a way, using an actual unit (such as a squadron, platoon, or skirmisher) or leader truly makes the play style very historical, and real. You issue your orders to your forces automatically on the first turn (& when they arrive as reinforcements), and then, whenever a new order is being sent to a force, it has to be physically carried there. The player (using honor system that is already in place for command/control) designates the 'courier', as listed above, and then the message has got to be delivered. I think this has the promise (or curse) of making 'realistic play' for grand tactics and operational level scenarios, as do the historical rules for tactics.

Yes, but it means adding more units and frankly I do not have the time to do that for every scenario I play.

One could either add more cavalry platoons, leaders (ADC's, Col Phantoms, etc), or, what I was meaning to suggest, use units/leaders already built into the game: a light Bn that can be broken down into multiple skirmisher units, or a cavalry regiment, etc. Even designating a unit close to hand... All involve the honor system, which is already in play with this rule. I have done this in games myself, and it worked fine. The point is that one is simply designating a messenger for the sending of a specific order. Chief of staff's work very well also. Back and forth the busy little couriers go. As long as they don't get captured. And, they can only go where they believe the force in question to be (supposing the force has moved for whatever reasons of circumstances). The vagaries of communication back in the days before wireless radio are quite adequately replicated in this manner. One may quickly learn why Berthier would send upwards of seven messengers depending upon the distance of the force in questions, and always more than one.

This sounds very interesting - I would be very willing to give these type of house rules a serious look -

Game design work keeping me swamped. Am laying out the pieces for a large battle tomorrow, have another one to lay out pieces on map and still another one needs an OB (not a big one ...) and I should have that one done by the weekend.

Plenty busy with design so the rules have taken a back seat.

Also: the D button on the toolbar in your version of Leipzig is not working right and so I do not want to release the rules until the update is out. You will need that D button to check on Leaders that are Out of Command each turn. Would make using the rules impossible otherwise.

Stay tuned as I happen to have the updated engine up and running and I will post out a complete game I play with Hotseat once I get the rules fully written. Not much left to go ...
