The Hanoverian Colonel is perturbed as he stands beside the smoking Russian Field Piece.

“I thought I was very clear in my orders that no shots were to be fired until I had a chance to parlay with those Saxon soldiers who are moving to our front,” he says with a look of extreme displeasure.

The Russian Artillerist sheepishly looks at the ground, “Sorry, sir. It just went off.” The smoldering match continues to burn in his hand as another Russian artillerist stifles a snicker.

“Well, you have probably just ended any chance we might have had to settle this peacefully,” continues the Colonel as he watches the enemy officers lead the two rider less horses to the rear. “Those are fellow Germans. There was a reasonable chance that we could have avoided a confrontation altogether. I might have even been able to convince them to join our cause and fight with us instead.”

“Well to be absolutely honest, sir,” replies the Russian Corporal, “we Russians really don’t care too much for Germans.”

The Hanoverian Commander casts a sideways glance at the Russian soldier who is staring at the damage his guns have wrought. “This is going to be a long day, isn’t it,” says the German Colonel.

“Yes, it does portend to be, Comrade Colonel,” says the Russian Artillerist as he watches the Saxons start rolling their own horse battery into firing position. “A rather long day indeed, sir.”

The Lieutenant of Light Infantry peers thru his spyglass, and studies the enemy position. There is the cannon still smoking from the shot that had knocked two cavalrymen from their mounts to lay forever still upon the ground.
What a strange war this is, the officer thinks to himself. Down there stands a red-coated Colonel from Hanover, in the service of the British crown, commanding Russian soldiers, fighting on German soil.
And here he was, a German mercenary commanding the famed Italian battalion of Tirailleurs du Po, assigned to one of L'Empereur's Generals, Reynier, fighting along side the Saxon Corps.
Setting aside the spyglass the Lieutenant rubs his eyes, before glancing behind at the columns of foot, horse, and artillery moving up.
He wonders at the intricate pathways leading from disparate sources to converge on this field, at this hour, to wreck havoc upon so many.
A shadow falls over him chasing away the sun for a moment. Peering skyward, he imagines he can see the spectral shape of the Valkyrie, swooping overhead, waiting to touch the brave warriors with her spear of destiny.

I am pleased we have such a poetic writer in the Grande Armee. Getting tired of all that Hanoverian dribble!

Oddly enough, I agree. It is about time you Frenchmen started defending yourselves.

More 'Hanoverian Dribble' to come. There seems to be an endless supply.

More seems to be the usual asset of the French. More dead bodies in Russia, more dead bodies in Germany and now more in France! (this month is the anniversary of the 1814 campaign battles of Arcis-sur-Aube, Paris, St. Dizier, etc.)

Keep on sending us MORE!!!

I believe it was left to Marechal Soult, who had pursued Moore so far across Spain only to have the British force narrowly escape, erect a monument to the man, on the field upon which he had fallen at the hour of his triumph.
Such honor and respect shown to one's foe speaks volumes to the gallantry the commanders of our various armies can have for one another.

Well spoken, Lt. Schmidgall. Should you fall upon this field today, the Hanoverians will raise a monument to your memory. Of course, we will bury you first.

Now, where were we.....oh, yes.

As the Hanoverian Colonel is discussing the finer points of diplomacy with the Russian gunner, a second, Russian battery springs to life with deafening thunder. Five more Saxon Hussars are knocked from their horses, never to rise again as the Winged Maidens of Odin swoop down upon the field to collect the dead and carry them aloft to their destiny in Valhalla. Boom! As the Saxons reply with round shot of their own, two Russian Hussars are thrown from their saddles. Boom! Boom!! Boom!!! Now five more Russians are collected by the Shield Maidens, for a count of twenty-seven of their Saxon enemies.

Ever the pragmatic warrior, the Hanoverian Colonel realizes that all chance of a negotiated settlement has passed. There is a time for soft words, but that moment is gone. Now is the time for decisive actions. Glancing behind, he sees that Ensign Peccolo has brought the Russian Grenadiers smartly forward to the sound of the guns. Good, he thinks, now let these Saxons come. The Emperor will have far fewer forces with which to spread his reign of terror when this day finally draws to a close. Too bad they could not be spared, but such are the fortunes of war.

Taking his spyglass from his belt, he scans the ridge to his front and right. The Saxon Hussars are visible along the crestline, thier numbers steadily dwindling as the Russian artillerists find the range. I wonder how many are masked by the slope, he thinks.

Snapping his spyglass shut with a click, he captures the attention of a Russian cavalry officer. "Podporuchik", calls the Hanoverian Commander.

"Da, Comrade Colonel", the officer says as he smartly snaps to attention.

"You see that high ground over there", nods the Colonel to a nearby hilltop. "Have your squadron fall in. We are going to take a good look at our enemy's dispositions."

"Da, Comrade Colonel", replies the young Russian officer with a toothy grin, "we follow you."

Boom! Boom! Boom!
The artillery of both opposing forces join together in a cacophony of thunder and fire.
A spray of earth showers down upon the Lieutenant giving him reason to think, someone may well be trying to bury me.
Below the hill upon which he stands, he observes the infantry and cavalry of the enemy going through their evolutions. "Those Russians there," he says to his escort from the nearby regiment of light cavalry, "are some tough fellows."
"Sir?" the young Hussar asked.
"Think of it," the Lieutenant replies, "they have marched all the way from the walls of Muscovey, chasing the scarecrow remenants of what was once the finest army ever seen, across the terrible winterscape of their homeland. And now they find themselves here, in our land, on our sacred soil."
"We will send them back to their motherland, sir," the Hussar says boldly.
The Lieutenant searches the face of the fellow, and likes what he sees; the boldness of youth, the steely determination of training, the eagerness to defend one's home.
Glancing at the other men about him, these Saxon warriors prepared for battle, prepared to feel the tap of the Valkyrie's spear upon their shoulders, the officer found himself smiling.
"Let us go then," he tells the Hussar. "We have a battle to fight and win."
"Sir!"

Well, I'll be the first to raise a glass to his demise :D and if the Colonel wants a monument built  the men will build it.

Oleg, what is the difference between a corpse and a live French men?
I don't know Yuri, what is the difference?
Why Oleg, the corpse doesn't have to wear purfume to smell better. :P

There seems to be a common misperception among Coalition officers concerning their French counterparts, and the smell of perfume.
I wish to clarify this for you... all.
The perfume you smell upon the dandy officers of the Imperial eagles of France is the perfume of the women in all the countries we have liberated, who have invited us into their loving embrace.
Ah, moan ami.
