The Colonel had been riding for the best part of two hours when he arrived at the Chateau near Brussels that his Commander in Chief used for his permanent headquarters. It was a welcome respite to dismount and stretch his legs. Handing his horse to a nearby Corporal, he mounted the stone steps leading to the entrance of the Chateau. A Dutch-Belgian Guide stood on either side of the doorway. Snapping to attention at the Colonel’s approach, the Guides were the epitomy of martial splendour. Their salute to the Colonel was flawless, and was returned in kind. The Guide on his right then opened the door to allow the Colonel entry.

The Colonel was met in the foyer by a Major of the Army Commander’s personal staff. After a brief exchange of salutes, the Major said “Good morning, Colonel Jones. I trust you had a pleasant ride. Our Commander in Chief is waiting for you in the study. Please allow me to show you the way.”

Following the Major down a long hallway, the Colonel could not help but be impressed by the ornate decor of the Chateau. Large cases lined the walls, filled with the trophies of many battles. The Colonel lost count of the number of enemy swords, banners and eagles that had been taken in the endless victories of the mighty Anglo-Allied Army. The Colonel smiled with pride, knowing that several of these trophies were acquired by his own hand.

Near the end of the hallway, the Major turned to his right and paused before a closed door. Knocking softly before opening the door, he announced the Colonel’s arrival. Stepping aside, he beckoned for the Colonel to enter the study, leaving the two senior officers to speak in peace and closing the door behind him.

“Colonel Jones, it is certainly good to see you again” said the Army Commander as he rose from his chair. Please have a seat. I am sure that your ride was rather long this morning. Can I interest you in a drink? I have some fine Brandy that I liberated from a French Maréchal. As he was passing into captivity anyway, I did not think he needed to take such a fine libation with him.”

Handing the Colonel a glass of Brandy, the Army Commander returns to his nearby seat. “I have been studying your battle records as of late. Quite impressive I must say. I have come to see that you are indeed a trustworthy and honourable officer and a most valuable asset to our fine army. As such, I feel a toast is in order. To the newest General officer in the Anglo-Allied Army” he says as he hands the Colonel a gold box containing his new epaulettes. Congratulations, Brigadier Jones.”

Congratulations on your promotion to Brigadier General!

Congralutations to Mark. Warning my fellow French officers General Jones is compiling a most excellent battle record. I see he has only lost his sword twice in 28 games.

Well done Mark I salute you! Helga a round here please.

Well done Brigadier Jones. Maybe now you can afford some proper cutlery to smite those French upstarts!

Gentlemen Officers All:

I am truly humbled by such fine remarks, and moreso by such esteemed officers. :D :D :D

A toast to each of you in turn, for this poor German woodsman could not be in any finer company! :P :P :P

Cheers, gentlemen!!!

My dear General Guegan, you may have any drink you desire, all on my tab of course. I know that my usual libation of choice is a bit harsh for the delicate French constitution.....er.... ......I mean the refined French palate. :P

Congratulations to the new Brigadier.

I'd say, "well done", but that implies an endorsement of sorts. Since I cannot in good conscience condone behavior which involves shooting at my comrades in arms, how about we settle on a curt nod and an acknowledgement that you have not yet managed to get yourself killed?

More jager in preparation for our pending conflict? Helga, keep this man's glass full if you please.

Cheers!

"My dear Marechal Bardon, leader of Tondu's Immortals", says the Hanoverian Brigadier as he accepts the offered libation. "I don't shoot at your comrades in arms", he says as he downs the proffered shot of Jager. A brief moment passes as the Hanoverian's vocal chords recover from the latest onslaught. "I shoot through them." :P

"Helga, a second keg of ale for my fine French adversary. After all, if I am to be inebriated on the field of our next conflict, it is only fitting that he should be also." :? :? :?

"To your good health, sir! May the bullets never find you." :o :D

Well sir you should at least buy fine wine for the educated and sophisticated warriors of the only just cause; Liberty fraternity and equality.

Not warm beer!
