Let's keep strong personal viewpoints on Napoleon out of it.
In case anyone is confused, I don't have strong, personal viewpoints about Napoleon. Now, the viewpoints of a Hanoverian officer that I know are particularly strong when it comes to Bonaparte. In his world, the Emperor of France is very much alive. In mine, the man has been dead for nearly 200 years. I think there are a lot of people in this club that confuse the two, but no one should ever assume that I personally confuse them. One is role playing, and the other reality. Back in the day, I heard of some people that actually took role playing too seriously and murdered their sibling because they were convinced he really was an Orc. I never had that problem. Never will. It is a mistake to ever confuse the two, and not one that you will ever see me make.
I, as the President of this club, believe that Napoleon Bonaparte was an unquestionable genius who did much good for the world and also a great deal of harm. I respect him for his great abilities, but do not overlook his faults either. I neither hate, nor worship the man.
My Hanoverian persona in this club literally does hate Bonaparte. He was forced to join the Westphalian Army to protect his idealistic younger brother who was mesmerized by the Corsican and voluntarily enlisted. Both marched into Russia in 1812 as a part of La Grande Armee. Both suffered the greatest of hardships as what little food and warm clothing that could be had was distributed to the French Guardsman and regular troops while their allies were left to starve and freeze. His little brother was killed by a Cossack who in turn fell to the rifle of the Westphalian Sous Lietenant that you now know as the Commander of the Hanoverian Brigade. Yes, my character hates Bonaparte, and would gladly risk being run through by General Knox's sword to deliver a fatal bullet between the Corsican's eyes.
I am a role player and a writer, both of which demand a storyline to be effective. I view every member as a fellow gamer, and make no distinction whatsoever in their relative value by the fictitious army in which they serve. The simple purpose of this club, to me, is to have fun and make as many Napoleonic gaming friends along the way as possible. I do not at present believe that this view is shared by all, but I hold out the hope that one day it will be. We are all brother gamers united in a love for Napoleonic history and military wargames. Never get so deeply involved that you forget to have fun along the way, or forget that our ranks and titles are not actually real.
Now, if you will excuse me, I must go sharpen a pike. It wouldn’t do to mount the Corsican's head on something dull. That would just be plain disrespectful.
