Topic says it all, am starting a new game and I see this as an optional rule a lot, what is the reason.

Ken,

To stop the blitzkrieg the embedded melee came about. Basically, you play the turn style, but once you start melees you can't go back to moving. There are variations to this basic explanation.

By doing this you can't melee a hole in your opponent's line exploit the gap, isolate units of said line and destroy them with follow up melees in the same turn.

People didn't want to use the phased turned system to eliminate it because of number of file exchanges, and some subtle differences between the turn and phased play (such as when formations can be changed, etc.), and they didn't want to release their defensive fire to the Optional Rule that has the Ai do it for them, so to try and have thier cake and eat it too, they complicated the turn style play. As only gamers can. ;-)

I don't like playing with any house rules, so I don't use it. I have a poor memory and would no doubt violate the rule or spirit thereof.
