Graf Gneisenau receives a dispatch rider sent by Wellington. “His Lordship sends his respects, and bids me convey the following dispatch”, Graf Gneisenau takes the leather bundle and opens the letter within. The merest hint of a smile can be seen on the chief of staff’s face. “My compliments to his Lordship, tell him Yes!”. As the dispatch rider takes his leave Graf Gneisenau calls in several aides.

In the heat and torment of battle, OberstLt. Wienskowski leading 23. Infanterie-regiment raises his eyeglass and scans the front, in a brief break in the choking cloud of cordite and gunpowder smoke he spies the uniform of a French GenBrig standing high in his stirrups, just as rapidly the image disappears. “Steady men, steady! This day will be ours!”.

The smoke and fire and the gun powered and the smell of dead and dying men and animals filled the air. We find the Emperor of the French setting looking down at the ground writing on the ground words that only he knew the meaning of. As the minutes slipped into hours he knew that every time a Prussian or Allied Soldat shot and killed one of his men that it meant that he would have that lest of a chance of beating what was a head of him in the next hour. Not thinking about the next day for he had only this day and it was nearly gone!

17:40 hrs: French Col Labiffe of the 2nd Dragons Brigade, 10th Cavalry Division leads a valiant charge up the slopes of Tongrinne Hill, northwest of Villere.

Prussian Infantry battalions are pushed back and several batteries of the foe's guns are wrecked in the daring attack as well!

The French fantassins observing the feat of arms send up a shout of "Huzzah!" that carries far across the battlefield and is heard in the petite maison of L'Empereur who cannot fail but to know the meaning of it's import.

The Joy that the common Soldat feels is not felt by the Emperor he knows that with every Cheval charge. That his elite horseman can not win the battle alone.

Blucher observed the charge of the French cavalry, and hearing the cheers of the France fantassins, wondered if Napoleon really thought that his elite horsemen could win this battle on their own!

June 16th, 1815 14:30 hrs:

Oberst Thumen leads a bold charge by the combeined 3rd & 5th Ulanen Regiments supported by the 2. WestPrussian Dragoons and the 5 Hussaren regiments driving French skirmishers from the field and providing a welcome respite to the Infantry.

To the east of the allied line Wellington informs the Duke of Brunswick, the Prince of Orange and Gen. Picton on their dispositions, directing the allies into Sombreffe. Looking eastwards along the Brussels road he spies long columns of red and blue marching to the sound of the guns. “Will it be enough?” questions the Prince. “it will have to be by God! Gentlemen to your stations!”

The Emperor is please with the brave Dragons who are brought back from their exposed position and rallied by GdD Excelmans!

The commander of cavalry tells the weary but jubilant Col Labiffe that L'Empereur himself wishes to award him for his gallantry upon this field of blood. The sergeant that took the Prussian guns won the sword of honor, his third in three years of battle.

The fighting along the French Right Wing is most fierce and deadly, as the Prussians rain hammer blows upon the line of fantassins.

The rest of the front experiences a strange becalm, as the opposing forces regroup and refit for the coming storm of hot lead and sharp steel.
L' Empereur knows that he most give to get and honor is due to those who go beyond the call of duty!

Salute!

June 16th, 1815
18:00 hrs:
The semaphore stations report the Battle of Tongrinne has reached the halfway point (24 of 48 Turns)!

La Grande Armee and the combined forces of the Anglo-Allied and Prussian kingdoms are locked in mortal combat upon the battle map!

Current level of Losses & VPs are as follows:

French: infantry 9,903; cavalry 1,720; artillery 24. Leaders 9 (64 VPs); objectives 201; VPs 833 (French Minor Victory!).

Allies: infantry 14,549; cavalry 2,196; artillery 80; Leaders 8 (60 VPs).

Now the commanders plot and maneuver for the final act of the drama!

Regards,

Marchal Blucher and Gneisenau meet on the file and take stock of the recent successes on their left flank and thankful of the lull to the centre and right that provides time to rest and redeploy the men.

The Allies unleash a series of bold cavalry charges with Drogoner and Uhlans of the Prussians under the command of Col. Jurgass taking two French Dragon regiments in the flank and pushing them out of position. The fearless Uhlans of the Brunswick ride headlong at a French horse battery, even the close range canister cannot stop them from sweeping it and the skirmishers protecting it from the field.

18:00 hrs: On the hillside north of Ligny, the cavalry clashes continue with French lancers opposing the Allied Hussars and Heavy horse!

At Tongrinne village French Col Carre, carrying the eagle of the 48th Regt, leads an assault column that melees a Prussian battery position.

North of Villere, the Dragons who are not to be outdone by the fantassins, charge back into the fray!

Over all of the front the thunder of guns shakes the ground and splits the sky with fire.

The Prussians under Lt General Von Gneisau on the Allied left lunch an Attack to recover lost territory. As the French Guard moved to the Prussian right.

With shdows of early evening beginning to lengthen the Prussian left flank emboldened by the news that the allies have made contact with their right launch a series of attacks against the French line, pushing the brave Frenchman back.

In the confusion the French Col Chailot who had led a brave charge of the combined 6th, 8th & 10th Dragons finds himself cut off from the French line.

With the allies still manoeuvring into their new position the flanking combined cavalry of the Allies and Prussians unleash a series of charges against the disordered French 8th Lancers causing heavy casualties, surely they will break.

More fresh Allied troops enter the cauldron of Tongrinne, which will go down in history as a bloody day.

18:15 hrs: L'Empereur scans the field of carnage through the smoke and flames that sear the air, comparing the reports received from excited AdC's with what he can see for himself.

He has always had a gift for these things, to sense the movement of forces beyond the ken of man.

It is the lesson of war, which all who wage it with skill and verve can know.

Take the Grumblers for example... veterans of untold campaigns, who having survived this long also know what moves upon the fields of battle.

And the Grumblers are doing just that, grumbling... with impatience.

18:30 hrs: All across the battle front from Tongrinne to Villere the Prussian counter-attacks have been resisted by the valiant fantassins of the Right Wing, led by Prince de Moskowa, Marechal Ney.

Whose will and strength will be proven as iron, and whose of mortal flesh and bone?

L'Empereur has received the reports of Anglo-Allied forces deploying in and around Sombreffe, and measures are calculated in accord.

In those sectors where the fighting rages the tempo never slackens, yet all know that the cauldron is yet to reach full boil.

The god's of war are stirring, and the sky blackens with ravens.

18:30 hrs:

The Allied staff officers make their way under flag of truce into the courtyard of a tavern which somehow remains standing and unburnt in the otherwise flaming wreck of Tongrinne village.

Negotiations result in a French Minor Victory, and with the agreed ceasefire of the batteries on both sides a sudden calm descends over the battle map.

The Rot Adlers pull back their forces, withdrawing deeper into the interior of the Belgian countryside, while the Tirailleurs et Dragons! organize the exhausted yet elated fantassins.

This was an exciting and challenging contest of arms!

Capt. Fabio Fogato and myself salute our noble adversaries: Generallieutenant David GrobHerzog Stotsenburgh, General der Kavallerie Clifton Prinz Dumas Seeney, and GeneralMajor Ian Herzog Hames.

Regards,
