Nothing bad folks, just a comment about websites.... 8)

Just wanted to state for the purpose of having a record searchable on the forums, per the Club Cabinet Minutes the mention by President Mark Jones "I do not think that the Webpage Developer should ever hold the club 'hostage' with his work".....

...I've seen this in other Clubs and I've had to deal with cleaning up an army's data and building a new one after someone did it years ago in the ACWGC. But I don't think we've ever had that be the case here and the posting of the Club websites to the server is a good way to prevent it. I hope that the leadership is able to get the Anglo-Allied & Russian pages online soon too. I believe they are uploaded though not linked up yet....

As far as I can tell all Club websites currently on the servers were given willingly and without reservation by the designers, including my own sites. There just happened to be some delays due to real life issues, technical problems with transitions, loss of webmasters and initial concerns, but those were worked out in private emails. The end result was going to be the same, they were going to go up on the server eventually.

My own sites are given without any restrictions and are fair use for the Club and future members to use. They are a gift for the years I have loved being a member of the Club, for the ability to provide the service for the members that I have long loved doing and in honor of those who were once here in the Club, but are no longer. May their records & legacy live on forever. I claim no "ownership" or copyright over them. Future webmasters are free to edit or change whatever they may like. 8)

The loss of websites over the years has hurt the Club and almost every armies records, except the Prussians have been lost, so the program of having them on the Club server is a great way to make sure that such is not lost again. I personally have rebuilt one too many pages from scratch to know the efforts involved and this system helps end the need to do a "remake" of all pages.

This is just a comment on the news, no discussion is needed, no one is angry or anything. :) This is kind of a footnote so it is searchable in the forum for the future. It also comes from being involved in past leadership of the Club and knowing quite a few end results of past websites.

Good job to the Cabinet! Keep up the good work... :D

The reason that I advocated placing all of the club's webpages on the Club Server was for the express purpose that our club would be protected in the event something happened to the person on whose server the webpages were housed. It just made sense to me that they should all be in the same place where they could be readily accessed by a pool of webmasters, as opposed to only one. This has the added benefit that we can combine our resources and create a team of webmaster that will work together to keep our webpages current at all times. My goal is that no webpage in our club will ever be out of date more than two weeks. This will be an incredible improvement over the manner is which we have been operating since I joined the NWC in 2010. From what I have heard, the problem was far older than that. I was even told of one Army Corps page in the past that had not been updated in two years. Needless to say, we have made improvements, with still more to come.

All of the army webpages are linked and running off the Club Server now. I have to admit that it took far longer to accomplish this than I think it should have, but it is progress nevertheless. We are in the process of forming the webmaster pools, and I would encourage any of you who have any interest and skill in this area to let me know. We need all the talented hands we can get. The more we can divide the work, the less onerous it will be for any few individuals. This will forestall burnout which will enhance the longevity of our club and its operations. There will be two webmasters assigned for each army based on our current command structure. LGA may wish to add additional army webmasters at their discretion since they the most officers to handle of any single army in our club.

In addition, there will be specific webmasters assigned to handle all club webpages that are not army specific. These individuals will also act as a backup for all of the army webmasters in the event any of our webpages exceed two weeks between updates.

It is my hope that the redundancy, and team attitude, of this new system will become a major benefit for the members of our club. Our goal is to recognize the accomplishments of our member officers in a more timely manner than we have done in the past. Many hands make small work. Please volunteer to help if you can.

Thanks.

I have always enjoyed doing the websites. It brings a real sense of accomplishment and I encourage all those interested to help out. I for one am no longer able to do it in a timely fashion and could not meet the two week expectations. I used to be able to do almost day of, but not anymore.

It also is good for the reasons Mark cites. We've had members who pass on or quit or drop from contact and we can't easily get the sites sometimes. My own personal server switches had issues on every one of them that I did, so naturally the Club server was the most stable environment. Plus I no longer pay out of pocket for a server service. :)

It is a good program and hopefully there can be enough volunteers to make things happen. :)

This actually further reminds me, I've got a copy of the old Austrian site I'll upload too. There is data there for people who are no longer members, in case they happen to come back... :)
