Gentlemen,

I cannot start my PBEM Jena game of version 1.04
The game engine sends me this message:
Error opening log file pbemail.yyy

Help me, please! What I have to do? :?

Thanks a lot for ahead.

Try to delete pbemail.xxx and pbemail.yyy files from your Jena parent folder.

I'm no 'puter expert by far, but I can say that those files were constantly generated on my previous computer system (XP), but never caused an issue.

However, since beginning to use my new operating system (Windows8) these files have not yet appeared.

So I don't know if it is a game thing, or an operating system issue.

Regards,

I believe those files give the computer a reference point for placing the saved data for the units on the scenario map. I could be wrong, but the file names would seem to indicate something of that type of function.

Prior to a certain point (Leipzig I think), these files were not deleted by the system. They were overwritten with new files during each game turn. For some reason, this could cause problems with file corruptions from time to time. Sometimes the files could be recovered and made to continue working, but often they crashed completely. When this occurred, the game in play was irrevocably lost. The only thing that could prevent this from happening was a disciplined routine of deleting both the pbem.xxx and pbem.yyy files every time you completed a turn. To be truly effective, all players had to adhere to this practice.

Starting at a certain point (Leipzig I believe), a feature was incorporated into the games whereby these files were automatically deleted by the system each time you closed your game. This feature eliminated the manual file deletion tasks, and albeit eradicated the file corruption issues that were fairly common in the older titles. Games that were released after this point carried the auto delete function. When the subsequent patches were released for the older games, this same auto file deletion system was added. Hopefully our file corruption issues are a thing of the past now. Nothing but a 'bad memory' as it were.
