Interesting indeed. However as an archaeologist I'd question the need for it. It's kind of inductive reasoning. We all know there was a battle there so what are they trying to prove? It would be more interesting if for example they could look at the number of musket balls recovered and determine if indeed "hundreds of thousands" were fired that day. Or how much the evidence has been destroyed over 200 years of ploughing, souvenir hunting and weather. A mass grave if found, may indicate the proportion of those killed by shooting as opposed to close-quarter combat but again, this would not be representative of an open battlefield where proportions may be different; but uncovering any mass grave without analysis proves nothing to my mind.
