I have seen where a damaged modem or network card would prevent a computer from booting. So, if a surge came down the phone line and zapped your modem, or down the cable line and zapped your NIC, then that could be the problem. Try removing both from your system and see if it boots. If it won't come on at all, it may just be a blown power supply. That will run you $49.00...a whole lot cheaper than an entire new system.

Echoing Rich's commments:
(not trying to sound like a know it all - just offering up advice from six years of tech support)
1. Unplug and then plug the system back in. You may have done this already but I have found this to be the cause of many systems to not boot. If it still doesnt work it may be the power supply but not always.
Next:
2. Unplug the power from the power supply to the M-Board and then plug it back into the M-Board. If this doesnt fix the problem then try unplugging the power supply from the motherboard and power it up. If that doesnt work then go to #3
3. Reseat all cards in their slots and then power it on. If it doesnt come on then go to #4
4. Rich's idea - remove the cards one by one. Try not to boot into Windows to avoid the old "Hardware has been updated" or whatever the message says.
I have found that most of the time it is the power supply followed by item #2. Unplugging the computer solves the problem about 80 percent of the time. Unplugging the power supply from the motherboard does the rest.
Sorry to hear of your problems. You are the second of the club leaders (Sean) that has had significant problems. Let me know if you need some help getting back online. I am available in evenings.

At the library, taking a few minutes from job hunting, to let you know some progress was made this weekend.

Rich, I have a cable hook up at home so I unplugged the card inside my computer that the line from the modem connects to, and VIOLA! The machine started up! [:)]

So I can use my computer again, helps with printing resumes [;)], but I can't access the internet because everytime I plug that card back in nothing happens [:(].

Hopefully, it won't be too long to find a replacement.

The job search is starting to improve. All prayers and crossed fingers appreciated.

Mike, not sure how I can e-mail you at the present time.

I will be stopping at the library every Saturday and reading through the boards quickly, if you wish to poat something in this thread to tell me.

A couple things to try.

1) Most cable companies provide NIC cards for their customers. Contact then, tell them your Network Card (NIC) is fried and see if they will give you a new one...

2) If that doesn't work head to your local computer store. You can pick one up easily. Some as cheap as $20.00, but I would suggest getting a 3COM card if you can afford it. In the $49.00 range.

Hey! I'm back.

I told a friend of mine what happened to my machine, and he rumaged through some of his "old" PCs. found out he had one like the one I'm running, so he pulled the card I needed and viola I'm on line again.

Still looking for work, but some interviews have finally occured so .... we'll see [:)]!
