Way to go Ken! Your predecessor, James Poli, made a name for himself and the proud Hessians. They did have one problem though - the British charged them income tax (horn sounds of WAH Wah wah wah!!!)

on the Americans... who fled precipitously I might add.

to be correct: we will have to pay taxes, after the war when every German soldier in British service is given his piece of land in the colonies (there should be enough "empty" estates then [}:)] ).

If the early indicators are correct, seems that the Hessians are to be a force to be reckoned with. Waxy mustaches not withstanding. (Tell me is it true that they store their boot polish as a paste in the facial hair?)

Larry - yes, by the way my units are starting to run in Rhode Island I would say that you must have used MASTER CARD! Remember - there is a 3 percent surcharge on all charges.

I'm not sure about the boot wax, but I occasionally borrow some of the white clay that they paste their braids with (ya gotta love that by Jove!) [:o)] to make little colonial voodoo dolls of certain Yankee scoundrels. [;)]

It's a pity we have no Austrians in the club because they sure would like this. When the Feldzeugmeister Graf Gyulai took command of the (Austrian) Army of Italy in the 1840s he noticed that his soldiers looked too <b>different</b>. First thing he ordered that every enlisted man had to grow a black mustache. If his mustache happened to have any other color he had to dye it black with shoe polish. If he didn't manage to grow a proper mustache he had to paint one on with shoe polish. Also Gyulai noted that the knapsacks of his soldiers were from natural colored leather and thus produced a not too uniform impression when a line did an about-face because the colors were slightly different. Again, he ordered that all knapsacks had to be dyed black - with shoe polish.
For a start the look of his men was very favorable after that. But it get's awfully hot in Italy in the summer, and men start to sweat. The shoe polish starts to run. It's black. And the Austrian uniform coat is <b>white</b>. You get the picture ... the scheme was abanoned. [:D]

And of course, they were all too busy using up immense piles of shoe polish to properly learn to use their new rifles, and so when they met the French they were defeated by outdated tactics. Thus, the Austrians decided that the outdated tactics were the proper ones to use, so they got smushed by the Prussians [:(]

Ok, there are a few holes in that theory.. but it does say something about our beloved Austrians

Hey Larry, I like that flag, very nice. Maybe we could start a graphics department for the club and help new members, or all members for that matter, have some nice icons/flags for their units...

Yes, that is true.

The Austrians of the middle 19th century made attacking an obsession. It is said that the Prussian needle-rifle was fast fireing but of lower range, and the Austrian muzzle-loaders where slow fireing but of longer range. So, the worst thing the Austrians could do was to run on the Prussians in dense masses - and that was excatly what they were drilled to do at any occasion!

It is the same as if in C1776 one uses his militia for attacks in column only.

The flag is the 64th Regiment's battle flag or regimental flag. Each British Regiment carried two flags, their regimental flag in the color matching their facings, and the King's colors which was the country flag with the Regimental number in the center of it. Phil Natta just added a great link to the bottom of the British Army page that has all the regimental and King's colors for each British regiment that fought in the F&I and the ARW. For those in regular British regiments, your flags are there.
