Ok - the vast majority of you voted for the options we are using so I will amuse you with some antics from my game:
1. Because of Weak ZOCs - "Ok men, the boys are in the bag. Are you all lined up on all six hexsides?" "YESSIR" "Ok. On a count of 3 we all jump and bag the buggers! 1 - 2!! - 3!!!! (sound of fighting)" "Sir, we have bagged them! Do we HAVE to do that again?" "Yes Major as the rules were for Weak ZOCs. This means that none of those British lobsters can be bagged unless you have them on all sides. As you and I know they would have surrendered anyway!"
2. Automatic Defensive Fire - "Sir, where are all of these bees coming from?" "You fool - those are bullets!" "Bullets sir?" "Yes, the Brits learned how to fire as we MOVE!" "Now who told them such a thing?" "I dont know but anyday now I think they will get tired of all of these bee stings!"
3. Isolation rules - "Sir, we have been in this pocket now for over five turns. Do you think the Brits will ever get wise to the fact that those invitations to tea (ie. surrneder) just are not going to interest us in the least?" "Just keep on digging Captain."
Next tourny I am going to stuff the ballot box!

Re weak ZOCs, occupying the two flank and two rear hexes will do.

Au contraire mon Major. You can eliminate them with 4 sides/rear hexes physically occupied and ZOC coverage on the front 2. This is of course a good use of the dragoons

Redcoat doctrine was to maintain continuous rolling fire, hence the use of firing platoons. The weak, but continuous, ADF is a decent representation of this. Screen your advance.

Of course a routed/isolated unit is another matter entirely. Even a stinky rifleman in X order can bag one of those!

But there a plenty who agree with your opinions Bill. Just not most!

I am almost sure the front hexes don't have to be ZOC covered.

"Sir, I think we could have utilized those two other stacks better." "Yes, from what I am reading we could have sent them back for R &R!"
Thanks guys, I havent experimented much with this rule (Weak ZOC) as I dont use it much in the small actions.
The jury is still out on the ADF feature for this game but if majority wants it (sigh!)...
Now what to do with those two stacks? (not talking about pancakes Ernie!).

I'm right there with you Bill ... but I must admit that slowly but surely I'm getting used to advancing under fire (with what sometimes feels like machine guns .. they fire so rapidly )

What's a machine gun you ask? .. It's something that I envisioned during one of my nightmares when trying to sleep near Germantown

Garry - you have been watching Ernie too much! Good emote - just tells the entire story without a long post of explanation!
Glyn - no, I was talking about that cav I lost! I thought for sure that they could SWIM AWAY!! BLUB BLUB ....
Looks bad for the Colonial side in this one. He has me at -50 points and it is steadily getting worse.

I find Weak ZOC to be a reasonable representation of a company's officers to get it out of and implausible situation:

Side A..."Yoo-hoo, enemy soldiers! Would you mind terribly to remain in your present formation while we cross 90 yards of deadly open ground in order that the 300 of us can surround you completely?"

Side B... "Um, no problem. And we'll signal our fellows not to fire at your exposed flanks and/or rear as you envelope us."

Since this isn't RT, it seems to me that Weak ZOC is the reasonable way to represent a sudden and necessary withdrawl.
