I know this is the Napoleonic War's Per Se, but I did have a few questions. I was just curious which would be a better title to purchase? Both about the Seven Year War. It seems H & M: VI is more of a tactical game vs. RoP which seems more strategic Is this the case? Does anyone have either of these games ? If so, could you please give me some info (Pro's/Con's) about either or whichever one you do have? Thanks!

I was not impressed with H&M. I owned both H&M and the other SYW Grand Tactical games and just never cared much for the interface or combat routines. Everyone is different and some here may have liked it.

On the other hand Rise of Prussia is a VERY good game. Scott Ludwig could tell you more about it. He has played it a bit. Gary McClellan may also have played it and Thomas Borling also owns it.

Yes, they are different scales. RoP is an area movement game of the entire war in the Germany area. You move brigades/divisions - that kind of thing - using an orders system.

Its a very good engine. The other AGEOD games are similar to it.

For Club Games: I prefer the Single Phase mode of play. I prefer to play with the following options OFF:

MDF, VP4LC, NRO, MTD, CMR, PR, MIM, NDM, OMR (ver 4.07)

The learning curve for Horse & Musket can be a bit much. The leader activation system is a bit of a pain. But it is still an interesting game. More like HPS in terms of regiments and rules.

Rise of Prussia I have tinkered with a bit. It is really a great system and quite the improvement upon some of their earlier style games in that type of engine. It also has a wide variety of forces to work with and really the main campaign map is huge! Def worth getting at some point....

You may find Rise of Prussia AAR here also explaining game mechanics.

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/sho ... 7b4b4fbb18

It has finished about 3 months as I was playing Prussians and it was an excellent game reflecting Frederick's desperate struggle against massive allied armies. Game is in very good shape and I recommend it.
Cheers.

I find the game engine for the Ageod titles to be a bit boring. The way battles are played out in RoP, BoA II, WWI, PoN etc.. are all pretty lame to tell you the truth. You're not involved. I love the tactical level of being involved and playing the battle. Hence, though not highly recommended it seems, I think H&M VI is more my cup of tea.

I think you'll find H & M to suit your needs then. It is really like HPS, just with an activation process built into it...

Gary - after your 1000th battle you might start to like the idea that you do not have to position every skirmisher exactly so that some dumb French blitz player who has nothing better to do than gloat all of the time runs you over.

The operational games make the blitz guys have to learn how to really play like they did in those days. Take the tweezers out of their (nose) hands.

Bill,

Yes, you're probably right! After a few dozen battles I might get sick of the whole tactical thing, but not yet!
